After years of financial struggles, including becoming the largest city in the U.S. by population to file for bankruptcy, the city of Detroit and surrounding areas have been recovering from the Great Recession.

But that doesn’t mean Detroiters and suburbanites know which jobs they should be investing in — which one’s pay the most money, where the best opportunities are, and government can create more innovative, creative, high-paying jobs for more people in the region.

Detroit Future City recently published a report about which occupations are most growth-oriented — that is, which sectors provide the most opportunities for job seekers. The report suggests there are about 107 different jobs that offer upward mobility into the middle class in Southeast Michigan.

Detroit Future City CEO Anika Goss returned to Detroit Today to chat with host Stephen Henderson about her organization’s report, how Detroiters can improve their skill sets, barriers that workers, especially people of color, still face and more.

Listen: Detroit Future City CEO Anika Goss discusses jobs report

Guest

Anika Goss is the CEO of Detroit Future City, a local think tank that recently published a report on the best job opportunities in Metro Detroit. She says the most “growth occupation” jobs are ones that include nurses, electricians and those work in Internet Technology.

“What we’re seeing is that too (much) of our population is falling really behind because they don’t have the education attainment that would qualify or position them for these jobs,” says Goss.
