Primary elections are going on Tuesday, including in Hamtramck, where residents will elect six out of nine candidates vying for three city council seats.

Hamtramck made news two months ago when the city unanimously voted to ban a variety of flags on city property, including Pride flags and flags with racist and political views. The issue became particularly heated because the resolution came down during June, which is Pride Month.

Who are the latest candidates running for seats in Hamtramck and what are their platform agendas?

Arab American News publisher Osama Siblani joined Detroit Today to discuss the Hamtramck primary election.

Osama Siblani is a publisher of the Arab American News, a news outlet which has been covering the city council primary in Hamtramck. He says the all-Muslim city council represents a demographic and social change in Hamtramck, which is more socially conservative than the politics of Detroit.

“Not every Arab American, not every Muslim, believes in what Hamtramck has done,” says Siblani, regarding preventing the hanging of political flags from city buildings.
