DPS Gets Interim Superintendent
District veteran now leading academics after transition manager Steven Rhodes makes interim superintendent appointment.
The Detroit Public Schools announced the selection of an interim superintendent on Monday.
Just a week after becoming the district’s new “transition” manager, retired Bankruptcy Judge Steven Rhodes appointed Alycia Meriweather to become the district’s superintendent. Meriweather will lead day-to-day operations in the school system’s Academics, Talent and Strategy divisions.
Rhodes, who has the powers of an emergency manager but has eschewed the title, oversees all other district operations. He says it was important to look within DPS for qualified candidates to serve as the school system’s top academic officer.
Meriweather is a former DPS science teacher — and an alum. She is leaving her post as the executive director of the district’s Office of Curriculum.
