After a long, contentious race, and multiple days of vote counting, Democrat Joe Biden has defeated President Donald Trump to become the 46th president of the United States.

The Associated Press called the race for Biden after Pennsylvania’s 20 electoral votes put him over the 270-vote threshold needed to win the Electoral College. Biden also took victories in “blue wall” states including Wisconsin and Michigan, which Trump won four years ago.

In the days following the election, President Trump made baseless statements about election fraud. Despite the president’s rhetoric, the Biden campaign emphasized patience and projected confidence as ballots continued to be counted in Democratic strongholds like Milwaukee, Detroit and Philadelphia.

At 78, Biden is the oldest president ever elected. His running mate, Sen. Kamala Harris, also makes history as the first woman, African American, and South Asian American to assume the vice presidency.

In a nation that has become increasingly polarized, Biden has highlighted his desire to govern all Americans, not just his Democratic base.
