Michigan Supreme Court Justice Mary Beth Kelly Steps Down
Kelly talks about what attracted her to the bench and why she’s leaving.

Former Michigan Supreme Court Justice Mary Beth Kelly resigned from the court on October 1st, before her current term was over. Governor Rick Snyder has appointed her replacement – a fellow Republican – and Kelly says she will now practice law in the private sector. Kelly joins host Stephen Henderson to discuss why she ran for office, and what comes next.
- Why she ran: “The Michigan Supreme court was very different [back in 2010] than what it is today,” Kelly says. She says the lack of civility she observed in the court became one of the reasons why she ran. She also ran to tackle juvenile justice issues.
- Five years later: “The reasons why I ran for the court have been accomplished,” Kelly says. Kelly says she believes she can best help clients in private practice rather than public office.
