On the Ground in El Paso: “We’re coming out of our mourning, and now we’re angry.”
The demeanor in El Paso has changed over the week as residents have begun to find a voice for their dismay.
Two mass shootings in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio, just hours apart, have shaken our sense of security yet again. The domestic terrorist attack in El Paso, especially, is exposing the darkest sides of American life, society and politics.
Maria Hinojosa, host of Latino USA, which airs on WDET Saturday mornings at 7 a.m. and Wednesday evenings at 10 p.m., and her reporting team have been on the ground in El Paso this week covering the aftermath of the attack, as well as President Trump’s visit in the wake of the killings. She says residents’ demeanor had changed dramatically between when her crew arrived on Monday and when the president came and left on Wednesday.
“By then, people were coming on there saying we’re coming out of our shock, we’re coming out of our mourning, and now we’re angry,” says Hinojosa.
