Whitmer Releases School Opening Plan, Announces More Funding

The governor struck a deal with the Republican-controlled legislature which includes $256 million in funding for schools re-opening.

Governor Whitmer released a plan Tuesday for reopening the state’s schools.

The “Return to School Roadmap” was developed with input from a 25 member advisory council made up of educators, public health officials and residents.

The governor also issued an executive order requiring school districts to develop 3 plans – one for providing completely remote learning, one for learning with strict safety protocols and one that accommodates learning as state protocols can be relaxed. The plan a district implements would be based on the number of COVID-19 cases in the area.

Whitmer says to implement coronavirus precautions, schools will need money.

“To support school planning and implementation efforts, I’m also announcing the $256 million in new funding for COVID-19 relief as part of the bipartisan budget agreement that we struck with the Senate Majority Leader the Speaker and the Democratic Leaders,” Whitmer said.

Whitmer, legislators and school leaders across the state have asked for federal funding to help schools which expect deep cuts and new expenses due to the pandemic.
