DER Weekends: Exploring the history of The Black Slate in Detroit

“Detroit Evening Report Weekends” spends time with the community members who make up Detroit’s rich culture and identity.

On the latest episode of DER Weekends, WDET’s Jerome Vaughn spoke with Kandia Milton, the chair of The Black Slate.

Many Detroit voters encounter The Black Slate at the polls on election day. It is one of now-many organizations that endorses and circulates a list of candidates in each election.

But The Black Slate has a long and singular history in the city. Its first campaign was organized around Coleman Young who would become Detroit’s first Black mayor.

Milton says the Slate looks for candidates they believe will act in the best interest of Black people and Detroiters.

He spoke to Vaughn about The Black Slate’s history, its current work and the issues on its radar this election season — including Black political leadership.
