Henry Ford Health, Michigan State University and the Detroit Pistons are proposing a development that will expand Henry Ford Hospital and transform a section of New Center.
The $3 billion project — which includes $273 million in tax subsidies — aims to create a new hospital and medical research campus that will include residential, commercial, retail and recreational developments over the next decade.
Denise Brooks-Williams, executive vice president and CEO for Care Delivery System Operations at Henry Ford Health, joined Detroit Today on Tuesday to discuss Henry Ford’s goal of advancing health care on the city’s west side, as well as the pros and cons of using tax incentives to attract business to the city.

Denise Brooks-Williams is the executive vice president and CEO for Care Delivery System Operations, Henry Ford Health. She says the “Future of Health” project includes a major expansion of Henry Ford Hospital and will bring mixed-income living spaces to the community.
“The project is a very exciting opportunity to bring a new hospital that will have a much expanded emergency room and all single patient rooms, all private rooms to the community,” she said. “It will in addition to that bring a research building which will help us to expand research to address a lot of the issues that are faced in the community around chronic conditions and gaps in care. And then lastly it will bring housing.”
