Henry Ford Health, Detroit Pistons owner Tom Gores are leading the charge to bring a $2.5 billion development to Detroit’s New Center neighborhood.

Plans include residential, commercial, retail, recreational and health care facilities — though the two entities’ projects are unrelated from each other.

Henry Ford Health’s project will feature an academic healthcare campus as part of a one million sq. foot expansion of Henry Ford Hospital. The development project also includes a medical research facility through a 30-year partnership between Henry Ford Health and Michigan State University’s Health Sciences division.

“This is a monumental moment for us,” Henry Ford Health President and CEO Robert Riney said in a statement. “World-class care is now going to have a world-class campus, right here in the city of Detroit.”

Gores is leading two housing developments that is expected to produce over 500 apartments. The billionaire hopes the investment will create jobs, access to healthcare and housing in Detroit.

Henry Ford Health plans to break ground in 2024 and Gores’ group hopes to start construction within the next couple of years.
