On the latest episode of Detroit Evening Report Weekends, WDET’s Nargis Rahman spoke with Jamiel Altaheri who becomes Hamtramck’s new police chief this month.

Altaheri has been serving as a deputy inspector and commanding officer for diversity and inclusion at the New York Police Department.

He was a founder of the NYPD Muslim Officers Society, and founded the Yemeni American Law Enforcement Officers Association.

Altaheris will be Hamtramck’s first Muslim and Yemeni police chief.

He spoke to Rahman about why he decided to come to the city, his plans for leading its law enforcement, and what he thinks community policing should look like.
