I report on children, families and education for 101.9 WDET. And I am a parent.
I am a poorly-homeschooling-during-coronavirus parent of a young and willful little girl and her increasingly smelly dog, learning I like cooking less than I thought and how quickly everything we know can be turned on its head.
Over the past few weeks, routines for kids and adults alike have been uprooted as schools have closed to deter the spread of the novel coronavirus. Social distancing has also eliminated the play dates, neighborhood gatherings, and family meals that serve as a crucial opportunity for parents to connect with one another and provide mental and emotional support to their parenting networks.
We wanted to create a space for parents to talk with other parents. To vent, joke, tell stories — to weep, if needed. We wanted to make sure parents doing their best during these incredible times feel supported, connected and heard.
Introducing “Doing Our Best,” a space for parents, educators, and caretakers to share what you’re doing while schools are closed, how you’re coping with the new roles you are playing in your households, and how your kids are adjusting to being at home and more.
So, come in. Tell us who you are and what you’re up to right now. Let’s get to know each other. And welcome.
