American Muslims are often the subject of media attention in moments of crisis or political uncertainty. Muslims in the media, then, often have to fight an uphill battle for accurate information.

BuzzFeed writer Ahmed Ali Akbar is at the forefront of that struggle with his new podcast called See Something, Say Something, a tongue-in-cheek reference to New York City’s infamous counterterrorism campaign.

On the podcast, Akbar attempts to uncover issues and conversations taking place across the full range of the American Muslim population.

Akbar speaks with Detroit Today associate producer Riyah Basha about the podcast and being Muslim in the United States.

According to Akbar, the goal for See Something is to provide a “space for Muslims to talk about their community and their culture.”

While the podcast is geared toward Muslim-Americans, the there are many other people who tune in.

“Our listenership is very mixed,” says Akbar.
