Detroit Police Commission Takes First Big Step Since Being Elected
Bankruptcy proceedings hamstrung Commission but Chairmen says group is ready to lead
Detroit police officers will soon have a new tool to help diffuse dangerous situations. The Detroit Board of Police Commissioners has approved the use, and purchase of electronic control weapons, commonly known as Tasers. It’s the first definitive action taken by the board since its members were elected two years ago. Willie Bell is Chairman of the Detroit Police Commission and represents District Four. He tells WDET’s Amy Miller that community members, the ACLU, doctors, the police union and others had been consulted before making a decision to allow officers to carry Tasers.
