Company says Enbridge Line 5 is in great shape but conservation community wants changes

A 60-year old pipeline running under the Straits of Mackinac is at the center of a new petition drive.

The age of Enbridge Line 5 has become a rallying cry for conservationists and others who say the pipeline presents too much risk for the waters of the Great Lakes. 

Jeffrey Hank is Vice Chair of the Keep Our Lakes Great Committeewhich plans to began collecting petition signatures today.

Hank tells WDET’s Amy Miller that the petition doesn’t shut down the pipeline. He says among other things, it restricts the pipeline from carrying crude oil, and requires hefty insurance policies.
