Canadian Officials Concerned About Effect of Travel Ban on Medical Emergencies
MP Masse says patients from Windsor often treated in Detroit
President Trumps travel ban is creating confusion and frustration for people crossing between Detroit and Windsor.
Customs officials have detained both Canadian and U.S. residents in an effort to comply with the ban. Trump’s executive order prevents residents of seven countries from entering the U.S. for the next 90 days.
West Windsor MP Brian Masse says there are a number of unforeseen complications, including the ability to send seriously sick patients from Windsor to Detroit for medical care. He says some of those patients may be refugees or immigrants from banned countries.
“Say, for example, a mom that is pregnant or is after pregnancy experiencing a severe risk problem. Often those patients can be sent to the United States, to Detroit, to be treated. Often, ironically by doctors who are from some of the banned countries on that list that have Canadian passports, because they work there. Those individuals could be detained at the border”
The White House is saying that dual citizenship and permanent residents with a valid residency card and a passport from their home country will not be refused entry into the U.S.
