Lake Erie Algae Added to Action List

Conservationists say listing waterway as impaired should bring resources to help curb algae growth

The State of Michigan is adding the western portion of Lake Erie to its list of impaired waterways. The list is required by the U-S Environmental Protection Agency as part of the Clean Waters Act. It prioritizes which bodies of water should receive funding or other action to help mitigate problems. Jill Ryan is Executive Director of Michigan based Freshwater Future. She tells WDET’s Amy Miller that in the case of Lake Erie, the listing could help find solutions to the harmful algal blooms that occur during summer months.
