Growing Numbers of High School Seniors are Taking “Gap Year” Before College
Some say taking a year off after high school helps students gain life experience and focus

President Obama’s oldest daughter, Malia, announced this week that she has been accepted to Harvard and plans to attend the storied institution but not before she takes some time off. Her decision to take a year off after high school is part of a growing trend called “gap year”. Author of College is Yours 2.0 and associate dean of college counseling at Cranbrook-Kingswood School in Bloomfield Hills, Patrick O’Connor, tells WDET’s Amy Miller that gap year is catching on in the U.S. but it’s been popular in other countries for a long time.
