Michigan Jobless Rate Increased 1% in January
The seasonally unadjusted rate puts unemployment at 6.6 percent statewide.
The state’s seasonally unadjusted unemployment rate was 6.6 percent in January. That’s according to a report released by the Michigan Department of Technology, Management, and Budget. The agency says the increase in the unemployment rate is tied largely to normal, annual changes in the job market. The jobless rate is down from January 2014, when it was 8.4 percent statewide.
The highest rate of unemployment was in the Northeast portion of the Lower Peninsula—which includes Cheboygan and Presque Isle counties. That area had an unemployment rate of 11 percent. The lowest rate was in the Ann Arbor area—at just under 4 percent. Metro Detroit’s January unemployment rate rose nearly a full-percentage point from December to 7.4 percent.
