Students from the University of Michigan often spend their spring break in Detroit — helping to clean up neighborhoods or working on other community projects.  But it isn’t the only school tackling such projects.

A group of students from Howard University in Washington D.C. is in Detroit this week helping kids improve their reading skills.

Chanel Boyd is a senior at the historically Black university.  She’s the coordinator for the Alternative Spring Break Detroit site for Howard.

She sat down with WDET’s Jerome Vaughn to talk about the project and why she got involved.

Boyd is graduating this year and is weighing her options for medical school in the fall.
