The State Board of Education Chooses Brian Whiston as the Next State School Superintendent
The vote was seven to one to select current Dearborn Schools Superintendent for the position.
The State Board of Education has selected Dearborn Schools Superintendent Brian Whiston as the new state school Superintendent. During the interview process, Whiston faced some criticism over expenses incurred while serving as a lobbyist for the intermediate school district in Oakland County. He admitted those expenses were improper, but he noted that his experience as a lobbyist demonstrates his ability to build relationships. In the final vote, seven of the eight board members voted in favor of Whiston after voting out Washtenaw Intermediate School District Superintendent Scott Menzel and Oakland Schools Superintendent Vickie Markavitch. Current state Superintendent Mike Flanagan will retire from the position at the end of June.
