Hamtramck Public Schools announced Thursday its Director of Human Resources Michelle Imbrunone will take a leave of absence.

The announcement comes as the district is reeling from a wave of resignations. More than 30 teachers and staff in Hamtramck have resigned this school year – a devastating loss for a district with only around 200 teachers.

Some staff members say they left the district because of retaliation they allege came directly from Imbrunone. Several teachers have said they were moved to new schools and positions after criticizing the district’s COVID-19 protocols or other policies.

Imbrunone’s leave coincides with a leave announced by superintendent Jaleelah Ahmed, who announced earlier this month she would be stepping away to focus on her mental and physical health.

The district’s letter to staff instructed them to not contact Imbrunone or respond to communication from her. For weeks, staff have reported Imbrunone has not responded to emails and could not be reached by phone.

Mujahed Elhady will be taking over Imbrunone’s duties.
