Weather Threat for Detroit Tigers Opening Day

Inclement weather could cause the cancellation of the Detroit Tigers’ Opening Day.

The last time that happened was in 1979 when over a foot of snow was on the ground.

With less than 24 hours before the scheduled first pitch for 2018, the National Weather Service gives a 90 percent chance of rain for Thursday. But Tigers officials say they are not phased.

As we do during the season, with the 81-game home schedule, each and every day you’re monitoring the weather,” says Tigers spokesman Ron Colangelo, who spoke with WDET’s Pat Batcheller. “Obviously with Opening Day, it’s even more imperative to communicate and monitor the radar, and we’re doing that. There are contingency plans, (but) as of right now it’s 1:10 first pitch.”

Keep an eye on the weather here throughout the day.

What happens if weather postpones the game?

The game would be rescheduled, likely the following day. This scenario happened last year when Opening Day was postponed in Chicago. Fans with tickets can use them to attend the rescheduled game.

What do I need to know about traffic downtown on Opening Day?

The following streets will be closed according to the city of Detroit: Brush from Madison to Montcalm, Montcalm from Brush to Woodward, Witherell from Montcalm to Adams and Adams from Witherell to Brush.

Where should I park?

Motorists should park in designated parking lots or locations, with clear signage and rates posted and avoid parking in vacant lots and paying individuals unauthorized to collect parking fees, according to the city
