Former GOP Spokesperson to Congress: Do Tax Overhaul Right, Not Fast

“If it’s worth doing, I’d rather do it right than do it fast, no matter what it is,” says Truscott.

Republicans are having a rough week.

They lost a U.S. Senate seat in the deep red state of Alabama. And it appears their hopes to overhaul the tax system before the end of the year might be in jeopardy.

John Truscott is a principal at Truscott Rossman, a political communications firm based in Michigan.

He joins Detroit Today with Stephen Henderson to talk about the week’s political news.

He says Republicans should not rush through legislation as large and complex as a major tax overhaul.

“If it’s worth doing, I’d rather to it right than do it fast, no matter what it is,” says Truscott. “And get it right, because it has a long-term effect.”

Truscott says an example is a proposal reportedly being discussed now as part of a compromise that would not reduce the number of tax brackets. He says that would be a mistake.

Henderson and Truscott also talk about this week’s decision by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to end Obama-era regulations on internet service providers (ISPs) — often referred to as “net neutrality” rules.
