A federal judge is sentencing a former cancer doctor from Metro Detroit to 45 years in prison…for fraudulently billing patients for unnecessary treatments.

As WDET’s Quinn Klinefelter reports…the doctor prescribed chemotherapy for hundreds of patients who did not need it…

The judge calls it a huge…horrific series of criminal acts.

50-year-old former Doctor Farid Fata…who operated half-a-dozen clinics in suburban Detroit…mis-diagnosed and mis-treated at least 550 patients – purposely giving some four times the recommended dose of cancer drugs…and prescribing chemotherapy to healthy patients.

In one case a patient received five years of chemotherapy treatments…instead of the standard six months.

In the process Fata fraudulently made about 20 million dollars.

In court…after receiving his 45 year sentence…an openly weeping Fata apologized for what he called his quest for power and greed.
