Every day somewhere across Michigan at least one person overdoses on heroin. The number of non-fatal hospitalizations due to overdoses associated with heroin, Vicodin, and any number of strong painkillers has increased over 100% over the last 10 years. State health officials say they’re working on a plan to help address the problem. WDET’s Amy Miller spoke with Elizabeth Hertel; director of health policy and innovation for Michigan’s Department of Health and Human Services. She says like many other states, Michigan has a heroin epidemic.
