Michigan’s Options for Fixing the Damn Roads

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer will lay out her first budget proposal this week. We expect it will explain in more detail how she plans to fix the roads and deliver on her central campaign promise.

But where will the money — an estimated $2 billion more each year than we spend now — come from?

Where should it come from?

What do our options look like? And which of them would be the best?

Candice Miller is Macomb County public works commissioner, someone who has focused on improving infrastructure above and below ground.

Eric Lupher is president of the Citizens Research Council of Michigan, which recently released a study titled, “Evaluating Michigan’s Options to Increase Road Funding.”

Adie Tomer is a fellow with the Brookings Institution’s Metropolitan Policy Program, leads that organization’s Metropolitan Infrastructure Initiative.
