The Lessons We’re Still Learning from the Civil War

American Civil War Museum CEO Christy Coleman joins Detroit Today with Stephen Henderson.

It seems like every few months we get a harsh reminder of the legacy of slavery and Jim Crow in the United States.

Recently, that was evident after a string of blackface controversies caused political turmoil in multiple states. All of these things have roots that go back to slavery in America.

One institution that must put into context slavery’s lasting impact on American society and politics is the American Civil War Museum in Richmond, Virginia. The museum’s CEO Christy Coleman will be in town this week for the 50th Anniversary of American Black Journal, a show that Stephen Henderson hosts on Detroit Public Television.

That event happens Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Garden Theater in Detroit.

Coleman joins Detroit Today with Stephen Henderson to talk about her role at the museum, especially as an African American woman, and the lasting impacts of the Civil War on modern society.
