He made the announcement during a live-streamed press conference at the Coleman A-Young Municipal Center.

“We are going to see [other] talent emerge, and I don’t have a favorite candidate. I don’t have somebody that I picked out. I’m going to be like the other Detroiters,” Duggan said. “I’m going to watch these candidates emerge and see who the right leader is. Somebody who will continue to bring us together. Somebody who will have the courage to tell you the truth about what you can do and what you can’t do. But here’s what I know for sure about this city: The next mayor is coming in in a far better place.”

Duggan was first elected as Detroit’s mayor in 2013 and has been reelected twice. He has been credited with playing a large role in Detroit’s revival over the past decade — as the city reduced crime, strengthened its finances and stemmed its population loss in the aftermath of the city’s 2013 bankruptcy.

Duggan says he will discuss his future political plans at a later date.

Before his election as mayor, Duggan served as deputy Wayne County executive, county prosecutor and the CEO of the Detroit Medical Center.

After Duggan’s announcement on Wednesday, several people are expected to consider running for mayor in 2025. City Council members Mary Sheffield and Fred Durhal and former Council member Saunteel Jenkins have already expressed interest in the city’s top job.
