Attorney General Dana Nessel on why she’s running for re-election

Nessel says her office is working to ensure that the election is safe and secure come November 8.

The attorney general’s office has a budget of about $106 million as of 2020, and is tasked with representing the state — including the governor and legislature — in court and in legal disputes. The office must also protect consumers, public safety, victims’ rights, take on civil suits and address illegal business practices. Which is all to say that it’s a really big job.

And for the past four years Attorney General Dana Nessel has been overseeing that office. She’s currently in a race against her Republican opponent Matt DePerno, who is the target of a federal investigation to see if he participated in a vote tabulator tampering scheme. Nonetheless, the race is very close.

“I successfully defended the legitimate results of the 2020 election here in Michigan, which was under assault.” — Dana Nessel, attorney general
