Detroit Financial Review Commission May Oversee Detroit Public Schools Finances

Michigan House gives DPS $48 Million, Tasks FRC to oversee it

Members of the Michigan House of Representatives approved legislation March 16 that would send Detroit Public Schools the money it needs to pay staff through the end of the school year.

That bill was paired with another measure that gave Detroit’s Financial Review Commission oversight of DPS finances. The FRC began supervising city finances after Detroit’s bankruptcy. The bills now move to the state Senate for approval.

Detroit Democratic Representative Sherry Gay Dagnogo says she’s concerned that the Financial Review Commission was given powers that should belong to an elected school board. The representative spoke with WDET’s Sascha Raiyn.
