Memorial Bike Ride Honors Martin Luther King, Jr.
Tour de Troit to ride through the sites of the 1963 Detroit Walk to Freedom.
Tour de Troit, a non-profit organization that promotes bike riding in the city, will hold an event to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. today. The group will host its fourth annual MLK memorial bike ride, taking participants on a 10 miles trek of Detroit’s civil rights history. Ride director Kelli Kavanaugh says the trip follows the route of the 1963 Detroit Walk to Freedom.
“The march ended at Cobo hall where 25,000 people were able to get inside Cobo and hear Dr. King deliver an early version of his famous ‘I Have a Dream…” speech, which of course, two months later he delivered in D.C. to wide acclaim.”

Kavanaugh says the event is free to all, but does require bikers to sign a waiver and wear a helmet. She says the tour will begin at 10 in the morning at the McGregor Memorial Conference Center on Wayne State’s campus.
