Emergency response training

The city of Detroit is offering free Community Emergency Response Team volunteer training for residents this week. The training is facilitated by Detroit Homeland Security & Emergency Management (DHSEM) and will cover disaster preparedness, search and rescue and medical care. Sessions are planned for 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturdays Sept. 21 and 28. Participants must complete all four sessions to receive their certificate of completion. For more information, call 313-596-1742. Register at detroitmi.gov/dhsem and search CERT.

National Preparedness Month

September is National Preparedness Month and in addition to the CERT training, DHSEM is encouraging everyone to be prepared to respond before, during and after a disaster or emergency. Information on how to to make an emergency communications plan or how to build an emergency supply kit can be found on the city’s website. The city is also encouraging residents to sign up for the Detroit Alerts 365 program, and the CodeRED Mobile Alert App emergency notification system.
