Today on the Detroit Evening Report, we cover an upcoming voter registration rally hosted by Cass Community Social Services; Detroit’s new solar initiative being placed on hold and more.

Voter registration rally

Cass Community Social Services is holding a voter registration rally on Thursday.

The organization says it wants to help improve Detroiters’ participation in the voting process. Political candidates including 13th District Congressman Shri Thanedar, U.S. Democratic Senate Candidate Hill Harper and Detroit City Council president Mary Sheffield are expected to attend the event.

The rally will take place from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Taylor Park, 11850 Woodrow Wilson, Detroit.

‘Hands off our culture’

A group of community organizations gathered in southwest Detroit last week for a discussion about what they’re calling “police overreach” at some recent social and cultural events held in the city.

Detroit Will Breathe, the Coalition for Police Transparency and Accountability, and Garage Cultural were among the groups in attendance at the “Community Hearing on Policing.”

The groups criticized the Detroit Police Department for shutting down Cinco de Mayo celebrations and auditions for the music and art gathering called “South West Fest.” Organizers accuse the DPD of responding differently to gatherings of Black and brown people than to predominately white crowds – such as for the NFL Draft.

Detroit’s solar initiative on hold…for now

The Detroit City Council is still considering a plan to place solar farms in several neighborhoods around the city.

Electricity generated by the “solar fields” would be used to power some city buildings.  But Council wants to take more time to examine the legality of the plans before any proposal is approved.

Several citizens spoke at yesterday’s City Council meeting about the possible benefits of solar farms, as well as expressing their concerns.

Deliberations to resume in Samantha Woll murder trial

The jury in the trial concerning the death of Detroit synagogue leader Samatha Woll were given a day off from deliberations on Wednesday, due to a juror’s child care conflict.

Michael Jackson Bolanos, 29, of Detroit, has been charged with stabbing Woll to death.  She was found outside her Lafayette Park home last October.

The jury reported it has been in a deadlock for the last four days of deliberations. Wayne County Circuit Judge Margaret Van Houten told jurors on Tuesday that if there is no movement by the end of their deliberations on Thursday, she will accept a hung jury.

Supino’s announces reopening

A beloved Detroit pizzeria announced this week it is reopening after a fire forced it to shut down for more than a year.

The loft above Supino’s Pizzeria on Russell Street caught fire in April 2023. Firefighters extinguished the blaze, but the Eastern Market restaurant sustained severe water damage.

Supino’s announced the reopening of its dine-in service on Instagram.

The Kansas City Chiefs have the best odds in the NFL. The Lions regular season starts on September 8.
