The concept of a metaverse has existed for decades. Generally, it’s a persistent online world that users can log into, and when they log out, it continues to change with other users’ input. Think: Second Life, Minecraft, Roblox.

Previously, the term was used to describe virtual reality, and only recently did Facebook turn it into a product of their own. In fact, they have so much faith in their Metaverse that they changed their company name to Meta. They’re pushing the idea of a unified metaverse, to the point that other online platforms would exist within theirs.

This idea has proven to be controversial, receiving both enthusiasm and skepticism. In this segment of the 1UPdate, we talk about what the Metaverse is, what it aims to do and how it has been received so far.
