Tax day has finally arrived. The coronavirus crisis forced the IRS to delay the typical April deadline until now. But IRS officials warn fraudsters are on the prowl for the personal information of taxpayers.
Even in the midst of a pandemic, one of the things that remains certain in life is taxes.
The Internal Revenue Service postponed the usual April deadline because of the COVID-19 crisis.
“These fraudsters, they will work off of rumors or peoples’ hopes that there may be some more stimulus money coming. And people think I can get that money much quicker this time if I put a down payment or if I give my bank account number or my credit card number.” – Luis Garcia, IRS
The Midwest spokesperson for the IRS, Luis Garcia, says cyber criminals are targeting taxpayers who believe new stimulus payments are coming, fraudulently asking them for down payments.
But Garcia tells WDET’s Quinn Klinefelter people don’t even have to pay to file their taxes if they go to the right place online.
