Whitmer Lifts ‘Stay Home’ Order, Reopening Dining, Public Spaces June 8th

The governor says restaurants, museums and libraries will reopen with restrictions, with the goal of having all businesses open by July 4th.

Whitmer Stay at Home presser

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is lifting many restrictions for Michiganders and businesses implemented to blunt the spread of COVID-19.

“Restaurants can reopen for indoor and outdoor seating, so long as tables can be kept six feet from one another.” — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer

Restaurants, libraries and museums will begin to open, with restrictions, on June 8. This is the biggest change in the Governer’s pandemic-response policy yet. The announcement marks a shift in Michigan’s re-opening to Phase 4, “Improving,” of the “MI Safe Start” plan introduced in early May.

“I have rescinded the ‘Safer-At-Home order, provided that Michiganders continue to do their part,” Whitmer said in a press conference. “Wearing masks, social distancing, washing our hands to keep COVID-19 from spreading again.”

Statewide restaurants will be able to reopen for dine-in service on June 8th – with some restrictions.

“Restaurants can reopen for indoor and outdoor seating, so long as tables can be kept six feet from one another,” Whitmer said.

Swimming pools and day camps for children will be allowed as well.

Some businesses like salons and gyms will stay closed for the time being. Whitmer says the goal is to have all businesses back open on July 4th.
