Presidential Candidate Jay Inslee Talks About Detroit Debates, Climate and Campaign
Washington Governor Jay Inslee joins Stephen Henderson for a post-debate conversation about climate policy and more.
While the second round of debates have concluded here in Detroit, we’re all still talking about them. One of the contenders on the stage last night was Washington Governor Jay Inslee, a candidate most well known for his stance on climate change, which he refers to a “crisis.”
Inslee joins Detroit Today with Stephen Henderson to talk about the debate last night and some of the issues most important to him.
“Everyday we suffer more damage across the United States from the climate crisis, and I have a unique position that I am the only candidate that has said this should be the top priority of the United States,” says Inslee. He also points to the work he has done in his home state to close the gender pay gap and provide guarantee healthcare for everybody. He says that if elected, he would bring those successful state programs to the rest of the country.
Inslee, who spent time at an environmental justice event while in Detroit for the debate, notes the inherent equity issues that are part of our environmental and climate problems. “Black Americans breathe about 50 percent more pollutants in their lifetime than white Americans,” he says.
