“Let me tell you a story.” Are there any more powerful words in the English language than these six?

Storytelling is, of course, our oldest art form. It’s a fundamental part of the way we relate to each other.

But think of the ways storytelling is changing — how we can spread stories faster and more vividly than ever before, and how stories have become the inner lining of our instant social and cultural narratives.

Three of the best storytellers in the country — all current or former Detroiters — join Detroit Today with Stephen Henderson to talk about storytelling, its history and its rise at the hands of technology.

Glynn Washington is the host of WNYC’s Snap Judgement and a Detroit native. Washington is in Detroit for the Detroit Podcast Festival.

Shannon Cason is the host of the Homemade Stories podcast. Cason hosts an event Friday that is part of the Detroit Podcast Festival.

Satori Shakoor is the host of the Secret Society of Twisted Storytellers monthly event and the host of WDET’s original podcast Twisted Storytellers, which just launched its third season.

To kick off the conversation Detroit Today host Stephen Henderson offers this reflection on the power of storytelling:

Tell me a story.

Tell me a story that will make me laugh, or cry.

Tell me a story that will inspire or move me.

Tell me a story that I’ll never forget – a story that will creep back into my consciousness over and over, at the most unexpected times.
