As the federal government shutdown drags on, more consequences are becoming evident.

That includes the many ways a shutdown affects the least economically secure Americans. Food and cash assistance, the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) — these are all federal programs that have a direct impact on low-income households.

If the government continues not to operate, it could make recipients of those programs vulnerable.

What effects of the shutdown are Michiganders feeling at this point?

Stephen Henderson speaks with Gilda Jacobs, president and CEO of the Michigan League for Public Policy about the ways in which the shutdown is hurting low-income Michiganders. He also speaks with Philip Knight the executive director of the Food Bank Council of Michigan, which has efforts underway to help federal workers affected by the partial government shutdown. And MSU economist Charles Ballard discusses the broader implications of the shutdown for Michigan’s economy.
