Voting Vote Election 6

WDET Digital

The August 7 primary elections are just a couple of weeks away. That means candidates are ramping up their efforts to get their names and messages out to voters.

But does that mean voters are actually aware of who and what they’ll be voting on in the primaries?

As part of their weekly series MichMash, Jake Neher and Cheyna Roth hit the streets to see if people can name any of the candidates for governor — or pronounce any of their names.

Click on the audio player above to hear people’s (often hilarious) answers, and listen to Neher and Roth’s conversation about the governor’s race.

This comes almost exactly a year after Neher and Roth did a similar (unscientific) experiment. You can listen to that here, and hear the difference a year makes in terms of candidate name recognition.

Neher and Roth offer this piece of advice: “Do your homework now!”

And, when it comes to doing research on the candidates for governor, we’ve made it very easy for you to do just that.

WDET and our Detroit Journalism Cooperative partners have interviewed six of the seven Democratic and Republican candidates for governor. You can check out those interviews here and get more information on the candidates below.
