An ambitious proposal to deepen the Rouge River is being put on hold. The U-S Army Corps of Engineers had been considering a plan, put forth by the Detroit Wayne Port Authority, to dredge and deepen the river for commercial navigation. But early on in the process concerns have been raised. Deputy Engineer for the Army Corps Detroit District, Scott Thieme says deepening the river is more complicated than first glance.

“If you deepen it, there was concern about the seawalls along the river, that you maybe undermine the stability there. So we would need to look into some of that before there would be any deepening done”  -Scott Thieme, USACE Detroit

Thieme says the plan moving forward is subject to discussions with the Detroit Wayne Port Authority.
