Detroit’s Holiday Home Movies Premiere at the DIA

Detroit 67 film collection holds holiday gold.

DIA Detroit Film Theatre 2

Detroit’s holiday home movies from yesteryear will be shown at the Detroit Institute of Arts Thursday.

The Detroit Institute of Arts collected home movies as a part of its Detroit 67 project looking back at the “riots” or “rebellion” of 1967. But the DIA’s Emily Bowyer said the 700 films collected show all aspects of life in Detroit.

“As we went through them and collected them we realized that there’s a lot of holiday films – people filming Christmas present openings or parties in the basement with decorations up,” Bowyer said.

About 5 hours of holiday home movies from the collection will be shown — going back as far as the 1940s. The screening starts at 1pm Thursday in the DIA’s Detroit Film Theatre starting.
