In this season of good will to all you might want to spare a kind thought for your local postal carrier.

U.S. Postal Service officials say this week is their busiest of the year.

Mail carriers unofficial motto has long been “neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from their appointed rounds.”

That might be true.

But they will probably be a bit overwhelmed by the time this week is through.

The numbers involved are staggering.

Officials say on a typical day about 3 million customers nationwide head to brick and mortar Post Office locations while another 2 million conduct business with service online.

But Postal officials predict that today (Mon.) there will be about 7 million visits to their website usps.com.

It’s the busiest day of the busiest week for the Post Office.

And with the rise in e-commerce, officials estimate there will be a 10 percent increase in holiday shipping compared to last year.

That works out to about 3 billion pieces of First Class Mail and 200 million packages delivered this week.
