What’s Really in the Water Along Lakes St. Clair and Erie

Citizen Scientists needed in Windsor Essex to help collect samples

Researchers are looking for citizen scientists to help collect water samples along the southern Ontario coast tomorrow (8/19). It’s part of a three-year project to analyze pathogens, bacteria, and contamination along the shores of Lake St. Clair, the Detroit River, and Lake Erie. Adjunct Professor with the Great Lakes Institute for Environmental Research at the University of Windsor, Subba Rao Chaganti says he would like to see 1,000 citizen scientists pick up containers and collect samples along the water bodies and associated tributaries.

“This year we want to do like a spatial map, all over Windsor Essex Region, not just like the public beaches, but  everywhere that there are tributaries joining to these lakes and even on the lakes too”
-Subba Rao Changanti

Chaganti says the data collected will allow scientist to provide more accurate predictions and provide information on how contaminants, bacteria, and pathogens impact the health of beaches and waterways between Belle River and Point Pelee, Ontario.
