Novi Firefighters Battle 25-Acre Blaze Near Twelve Oaks Mall

High winds fueled grass fire on MSU property in Novi.

Groups of a dozen firefighters at a time worked to extinguish a grass fire that was spreading quickly in Novi today.

Assistant Police Chief Jerrod Hart says the fire started this morning near 12 Mile and Meadowbrook roads.

“In a field that’s owned by Michigan State University — it’s called Tollgate Farms — firefighters quickly started to extinguish the fire. However with these high winds, they were met with some resistance from that,” he says. “The fire continued to spread east and a little bit north, through the grassy area, and actually extended over to the east side of Meadowbrook Road.”

Hart says its not yet clear what sparked the fire. About 25 acres burned before the fire was extinguished. There have been no reports of injury or personal property damage related to the fire, according to Hart.
