Joe Biden Says Farewell to Detroit, Sort of
VP Joe Biden notes Obama Admin. aid to Detroit, including auto bailout, WH officials helping during city’s bankruptcy.
U.S. Vice President Joe Biden gave something of a preview of President Obama’s farewell speech to a crowd in Detroit.
Biden says the Obama Administration is going out as it came in, with a message of hope.
Detroit and the Obama Administration have been tied together since the White House gave a financial bailout to the auto industry and helped the city navigate the nation’s largest-ever municipal bankruptcy.
Now, as the incoming Trump Administration prepares to take power, Biden says the nation’s future will be built by those who value inclusiveness, not division.
“The people with enormous courage, incredible sense of optimism. All the features, if you go around the world as I do, that are used by others to define who Americans are,” the Vice President said.
Biden told a crowd of entrepreneurs celebrating grants from the Motor City Match fund that Detroit is in far better shape now than when the Obama Administration took office eight years ago.
He said, “The city is fully lit and ahead of schedule, which is a great thing to hear in government. Eighty new buses, which I personally had to drive out here, ha! The President calls me the Vice President of Detroit. You think I’m kidding. I’m not.”
Questioned what he plans to do after leaving the White House, Biden, a noted car aficionado, said only, “I’m gonna buy a Corvette.”
