Bigger Cities Don’t Want to Pay for State Roads Anymore
SEMCOG says legislature poised to pass revision of state transportation law
As the legislature wraps up the 2016 session, the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments is hoping legislators will approve a major revision to state transportation law. Right now cities with populations of more than 25-thousand are required to pay a portion of any state road project that runs through its boundaries. Senate bill 10-68 removes that financial responsibility for freeway construction projects. That would include the impending I-75 reconstruction. Bill Anderson is a Specialist on local government-finance and operation for SEMCOG. He tells WDET’s Amy Miller the law has been on the books for decades but roads have not needed extensive rebuilding until now
