Lake Michigan Sands Moving South Each Year
USACE study looks at impacts of shifting sands on shorelines and development
Scientists are looking at shifting sands on the bottom of Lake Michigan and the relationship to erosion and shorelines. They’re focused on the south end of the lake. The U-S Army Corps of Engineers recently completed a detailed imaging study that looking at the lake-bottom. Scientists are using a similar study from 30 years ago as a baseline. Army Corps Hydraulic Engineer Jim Selegean tells WDET’s Amy Miller that shifting sand occurs naturally each year as part of the lakes ecosystem but modern development and lake levels can lead to a need for mitigation
