MIchigan May Ban Regulating of Plastic Bags
Michigan Senate voted to ban local governments from regulating plastic bags.
The Michigan Senate has passed a bill to ban local governments from regulating the use and sale of plastic bags. The legislation is an effort to prevent local government from banning or putting a price on plastic bags in stores.
However, Senator Curtis Hertel voted against the bill. He says cities have varied needs and should be allowed to create ordinances to address them.
“There’s no reason for the state to have a one size fits all when it comes to a lot of these problems,” Hertel says. “And certainly plastic bag ordinances are not something that needs to be decided by the State of Michigan.”
Hertel says the proposed ban is an example of the state trying to micro-manage local communities. The bill now heads to the state House.
